Preview of CAMERA 2.0

The Community Cyberinfrastructure for Advanced Microbial Ecology Research and Analysis (CAMERA) recently developed CAMERA 2.0, a new online resource for depositing, locating, analyzing, visualizing, and sharing data about microbial ecology and evolutionary biology. The new portal is currently available in beta and is set to be released this summer. CAMERA 2.0 will offer a much wider range of data storage and analysis capabilities than are currently available within the existing CAMERA environment.

CAMERA 2.0 is a freely available portal designed to facilitate research and collaboration by providing open access to sequencing data, metadata, pre-computed search results, computational resources, and many bioinformatics tools. Its extensible analysis environment and semantic database infrastructure make it unique among existing gene sequence resources. The CAMERA 2.0 database was structured to support the use of more intuitive query tools and to enable future growth in data volume. The data query interfaces were redesigned and expanded so that users will be able to submit metadata-based queries to search for genomic datasets within both CAMERA and external databases.

CAMERA 2.0 will allow researchers to employ integrated annotation and analysis tools using standard and customized project workflows within the CAMERA environment. CAMERA’s innovative workflow infrastructure will encourage scientific growth and collaboration by supporting the addition of new tools and workflows and by allowing workgroups to access output from existing workflows.

CAMERA is a dynamic resource and will continue to evolve to best meet the needs of the scientific community. For more information about the upcoming release of CAMERA 2.0, visit the CAMERA website at http://camera.calit2.net/.
